Artist Statement + Gallery Image from Final

My series was developed based off of the idea of passion a high schooler can experience. To be able to experience such an intense emotion in high school can give you an idea as to where your life will lead you in the future. As a senior, I’ve done a lot of thinking about what path my life will take. I’ve decided on art. I’m extremely passionate about photography; there isn’t a day where I’m not taking pictures. For my series, I decided I wanted to portray people experiencing a similar situation. The five ideas I chose were photography, style, music, journaling, and fashion. Five of my best friends experience these passions on a daily basis, and I decided to take an editorial approach to this series, using strong eye contact and a natural face as the unifying element. Each of the portraits are also in a square format to not only add a unique element to the piece, but also so the people are viewed as being the same. The color scheme I chose to use was cool tones. Blues and greens tend to represent a relaxed feeling, or something familiar. I believe nothing is as familiar as passion. If you are truly in love with something, then to be around it would almost familiar, as crazed as it may be.

FINAL

My series is finally complete. I stuck with the theme of passions we develop in high school, and how they may or may not lead into our lives in the future. I have style, photography, journaling, fashion, and music. I may or may not re-take Tyson's picture.. judging on how it looks when I have them all matted. What do you guys think?

Back of my Head + Favorite Color

(long exposure. i got home late + did long exposures in all the directions around my house, and i got my favorite deep blue color with this one. i also got red, orange, an even darker blue in other shots.. but this one classifies as one of my favorite colors.)

(single light w/o reflector. light was shining directly at my neck/face when i took this one. i wanted dramatic contrast)

Passion (Photography, Fashion, Shoes)

Shoes

Fashion

Photography

I decided to change my theme for several reasons. One of which is the fact that I truly love the images I was coming out with and wanted to twerk my idea for what images I had. I only kept two that I had taken... but I believe the theme of passion is evident throughout the three final images I have here. I took the advice given to me in the critique with the cropping of images to squares, because the uniformity given by such a stark geometric shape added drama to my images, which is was needed with an emotion as thought-evoking as passion. I also changed my theme because I realized with the eye contact I wanted in my images, that if someone was truly obsessed they would be thoroughly involved in the obsession, not looking at a photographer.
